Unable to compete with Amazon’s dominance, Barnes & Noble has thrown in the towel and announced that it’s shuttering its Nook ebook store and pulling its reader devices from shelves in the UK.

The bookseller will no longer offer digital content – including books, magazines, and videos – from March 15.

Barnes & Noble has told customers that they can still download and keep content they’ve previously bought, through a Nook e-reader or the Nook app for iOS and Android devices, until May 31.

Going forward, Nook users are being advised to use Sainsbury’sEntertainment on Demand platform for their digital needs. All of their previous Nook purchases will be redeemable on there.

The “vast majority” of Nook books are said to be in stock on the Sainsbury’s service, and users will be given vouchers for existing purchases that aren’t redeemable on there.

Barnes & Noble offered no explanation for its withdrawal from the UK ebook market, but it’s a safe bet to assume its pummelling at the hands of Kindle had something to do with it.
