Samsung is out to prove that the sloping displays on its Edge devices are more than just a gimmick, as its latest operating system update brings extra functionality to its curves.

The arrival of Android 6.0 Marshmallow on the Galaxy Note Edge, S6 Edge, and S6 Edge+ doubles the amount of pixels dedicated to the handsets’ side panels to 550 wide.

The Apps Edge which previously displayed the five most recently-used applications, now pins 10 apps and gives users the option to house favourites folders there.

The new Tasks Edge grants speedy access to specific app functions, while the Quick Tools panel puts a full utility on the side of the user’s device, such as a flashlight or compass.

Presumably these features will come preloaded on the Galaxy S7 Edge, which is set to be unveiled alongside the Galaxy S7 at Samsung’s pre-MWC 2016 press conference on February 21.
