The most popular apps of 2015

Roll up, roll up, it’s end of year awards season, and Apple has revealed which apps have been doing the big numbers over the past 12 months.

Everyone’s favourite free messaging service WhatsApp was the most downloaded iPhone app of 2015, topping a free apps list that also includes Dubsmash and Facebook’s Messenger in the podium positions.

When it comes to coughing up cash, Heads Up! was the most popular iPhone app, with the Official Fantasy Premium League 2015/16 download and Minecraft: Pocket Edition rounding out the top three.

 Minecraft also topped paid-for iPad downloads while the ever-addictive Crossy Road was the most popular free app among iPad owners.

On top of the best sellers lists, Apple has picked a few of its own favourites for special mention.

Here, The fantastic Enlight has been crowned Apple’s iPhone App of the Year, while Lara Croft GO has been awarded the iPhone Game of the Year accolade.

On the bigger screen, Airbnb has taken the iPad App of the Year gong, with Prune the iPad Game of the Year.
