Hold up. Next time you load up your Tinder or Grindr, be careful.

The dating apps have become hugely popular, but the number of crimes connected to them has also skyrocketed in recent years – most commonly violence or sex offences.

In 2013, there were 55 alleged crimes committed in England and Wales related to Tinder or Grindr (via The Huffington Post).

But last year (up to October 2015) had as many as 412 crime reports – 277 mentioning Tinder, while the other 135 involving Grindr.

“The rising popularity of online dating apps and websites has contributed to an increase in the number of recorded crimes,” said Andy Cooke, deputy chief constable of Merseyside Police. “We strongly encourage users to report offences and seek support if they become a victim of any type of crime.

“I would urge those who use online dating apps to be as security conscious as possible, and not to share personal data with anyone until they are sure about those they are communicating with.

“Similarly, individuals should stop all communications with anyone who attempts to perssurise them into something they are not comfortable about.”
